Having been a cargiver for many years, I have seen the impact our Fast Food lifestyle has had on us. It is frightening to see how rapidly obesity ages us. While those who eat healthy and remain active tend to not need the assistance of a caregiver until quite late in life, barring some other illness not related to lifestyle, I am seeing those with a history of obesity and a sedentary lifestyle needing care at a much younger age.

In addition to what we typically think of with regard to unhealthy eating habits (heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, etc), obesity can increase the risk of significant injury due to falls. The risk of complications during surgery increases...and imagine trying to recover from hip replacement surgery with an extra 50 pounds.

The healthcare industry has done a wonderful job of bringing attention to and offering assistance in managing heart disease, lung disease, cancer, etc., but I feel our industry needs to come together and get much more aggressive about education and assistance in managing obesity.

Interesting interview with Margaret Wylde, one of the industry's top researchers: http://www.levinassociates.com/dealmakersblog#Video

In it, Margaret states:

Margaret Wylde:
I'd probably say there's two (major issues). I know you wanted me to say one, but I can't. One is that I really feel the community was developed based on the pro forma, that the pricing was set to make the community work on pro forma and really was not set relative to what the consumer wants and how much they are willing to pay. That's Number 1, and that we see a lot, unfortunately.

The second one, I would say, particularly based on a lot of the market audits that we do today, is really a function of the salespeople. I'd say 90 percent of our sales people in our industry do not know what they're doing. They had a great ride, but now when the economy is down, we see such significant differences between people. I was working on a report not too long ago where a property that was in poor physical condition, poor location, older property, little bit higher prices at their market share and above, and it was performing fine.

Our client's property that's struggling: better property, prices a little bit lower, unit size about the same, physical plant very nice, but awful, below 70 percent occupancy. It's sales.

Sounds familar, doesn't it?

That's why, when we (TR Mann Consulting) assist a community with their marketing, we often insist in helping with sales training. Most sales people have never had proper training. You have to be able to close the leads coming in!

•Seniors Taking To Yoga For Exercise: http://preview.tinyurl.com/moob5v"
Tom,
yoga + purpose (meaning making) is as close to the fountain of youth as we’ve found. I was once watching an interview with Huston Smith who is Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion and Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at Syracuse University. Smith described his daily yoga ritual of getting up (4-5 AM) each morning.

In the interview he had on a boldly printed vest, a crop of brilliant white hair and neatly sculpted beard, his posture was upright; his thoughts were deep, complex, and clearly presented. He gave off an air of youthfulness (not anti-aging).

So, yoga (physical and mental ritual) and a magnificent obsession (in his case the world’s religions) can be the road to longevity and contribution.

I love chocolate..For a Hersey's Kiss. Wow!

I have a few thoughts left in this old brain. I will have to push some old things out to gather new information.

Yes, freedom of choice is a wonderful thing and as baby boomers we helped that movement in the 60's.
We have come a long way and learned much.

Its only a freedom of choice if what you're doing doesn't effect my health or my grandchildrens.

SMOKING is not a good choice. That is in a choice someone had to stop. Smokers new the health risks for others and seemed not to really care. So eat that donut and anything else you like but, Smoke your brains out at HOME and don't DRINK and drive.
